GEO 436 TOKYO: An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.2 jolted northern Japan on Sunday, the Japan Meteorological agency said. The quake, at 12:33 p.m. (11:33 p.m. EDT), was also felt in Tokyo. The focus of the tremor was 40 km (25 miles) below sea level off the east coast of Fukushima prefecture, on Japan’’s main island of Honshu, about 240 km (150 miles) northeast of Tokyo, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. No tsunami warning was issued and there were no early reports of damage. Earthquakes are common in Japan, one of the world’’s most seismically active areas. The country accounts for about 20 percent of the world’’s earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.
